Yorùbá Wikimedians User Group in collaboration with Àtèlẹwọ́, a pro-Yoruba language development organisation, organised a two-day training on Wikidata for young Yorùbá language experts, enthusiasts and scholars at the University of Ibadan.
The training which was led by a prolific and renowned Wikipedia editors, Mr. Olalekan Isaac and Mr. Olusola Olaniyan, the President and Chairman, Board of Trustee, Nigeria Wikimedians Foundation, saw participants who are mainly youths trained on how to contribute to Yorùbá Wikipedia, query Wikidata with the use of SPARQL tool and and how to contribute to content to Wikidata.
Other trainers at the training were, Mr. Mikaeel Sodiq Adéṣínà, the President of Yorùbá Wikimedians User Group and Hon. Dansu Peter, a member of the user group.
It is not a new story again that the mind of the youths absorbs knowledges more in their learning days and becomes the backbone for new inventions and innovations when they have access to the right tools at the right time, which would result into fueling both the economic and human development in a country.
Digital skills is the key to achieving a greater heights in any chosen field in the present century, and this is where Yorùbá Wikimedians User Group and as a nonprofit organisation is aiming to give the right digital knowledge to the young Yorùbá scholars and connect them to the right digital platforms where they can further develop their skills to stand out amongst their pairs.
Yorùbá language is one of the tree major languages widely spoken in Nigeria, it is often categorised as a minoritised language on internet, because it lacks enough resources on the Internet even as it is taught in our schools. Yorùbá Wikimedians User Group is putting up efforts to train Yorùbá linguists and scholars on how to create Yorùbá lexemes for basic Yorùbá words on Wikidata, give them hands on training on how to query Wikidata with the use of SPARQL tool, also educate them on unique ways of translating from any language of the world to Yorùbá Wikipedia with the use of Content Translation Tool.
This learning opportunity for the young linguists would further help them harmonise their knowledge with digital world.
“Our group won’t stop bridging knowledge gaps until everyone can share in the sum of all knowledge,” said the President, Mr. Mikaeel Sodiq Adéṣínà.
