United Capital Plc has confirmed the deaths of six employees in the devastating fire that ravaged Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The company, which occupies the 3rd and 4th floors of the building, released a statement on September 17, expressing profound grief over the loss of its staff members.
Details of the Incident
The fire, which started around 1:30 pm in the inverter room at the basement, spread quickly, filling the building with thick smoke. Panicked workers were seen attempting to escape through windows as emergency responders battled the flames. Despite rescue efforts, six United Capital employees tragically lost their lives, bringing the total death toll to 10, including four senior officials from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The management and staff of United Capital Plc described the departed colleagues as “an integral part of our company and family,” whose loss leaves an “immeasurable void”.
The company extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased, promising to provide support during this difficult time. A memorial service is being planned to honor the lives of the departed.
Response from Emergency Services
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside the Federal Fire Service, battled to contain the flames, rescuing nine individuals, with five successfully revived, while four remained unconscious. The company thanked emergency responders for their valiant assistance during the incident.
