A pregnant lady was today rejected by a nearby private hospital in Ogudu area of Lagos for not possessing the card of the hospital. The lady had been rushed to the facility considered near enough by men of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) when she suddenly fell into labor on a commercial bus.
Residents of Ogudu area of Lagos metropolis and passersby however condemned the rejection of the expectant mother accusing the hospital for not being humane.
The lady, in her early 30s was traveling on the commercial bus to the Lagos Island when she suddenly fell into labour. Her shout for help after seeing the head of her baby drew the attention of passersby and eventually men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on patrol of Ketu Alapere area of the metropolis.
The Police officers however saved the day by rushing her into the patrol vehicle to a nearby private hospital (name withheld) in Ogudu where she was rejected for not having a card of the hospital.
However, after losing so much fluid, the lady requested to be rushed to the Lagos Island Maternity where she was whisked to by the patrolling policemen.
The hospital took her into the labour room before the policemen returned to their duty post. She was however left in custody of three volunteers and nurses.
Nigeria is reported to have the second highest child, Maternal Mortality Rate with an estimated 608 deaths per 100,000 deliveries. The nation is ranked second only to India in the list of nations with the worst child mortality rate.
According to Women Health and Action Research Centre, an organisation committed to the promotion of intimate and reproductive health and social well-being of women and adolescents, out of 100,000 women that enter labour rooms, 50 of them do not come out alive. This however is not only due to incompetent hands or poorly equipped hospitals but lack of empathy on the part of medical professionals who must be trained specially on responsibility and empathy.
