Rape Ekiti woman, get jailed for life-Fayose

Ekiti State governor,Mr. Ayodele Fayose has threatened that henceforth, rapists in Ekiti State shallspend the rest of their days in jail.

Fayose who disclosedthis at the rally marking the 2017 International Women’s Day in Ado Ekiti theEkiti State capital did not hide his displeasure for the ill-treatment oftenmeted against women. “If you rape an Ekiti woman, you go to lifeimprisonment,” he charged.

The cheering crowd howeverapplauded the number one citizen of the South Western state who is known forhis love for the women folks and the downtrodden.

Elsewhere in LagosState, women in the state drawn from various civil society groups trooped outin their numbers to mark the day in a rally to the state secretariat.

Led by human rightsactivists Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, Dr. (Mrs.) Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi and otherleaders in the civil society, women carrying various inscriptions joined in theprocession along the ever-busy Awolowo way, Ikeja Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Director ofthe International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos, Mr. Lanre Arogundade also enjoinedthe Nigerian media to give more voice to the women folks in order to make thembolder in contributing to national development.

Arogundade, formerChairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Chapter said, “Onthis day, we at IPC are calling on the Nigeria media to address the imbalancein the coverage of women so that their true voices could be heard in politics,elections, governance and development,” adding that “by rendering theirsupport, the Nigerian media would contribute to the processes that will lead to the
realisation of thisyear’s theme: “Women in the changing world of work: Planet 50-50 by 2030.”
