The Federal Government is poised to pass the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill into law, a move that could transform the country’s economy and position it as a global leader in digital innovation.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made this remark at the official opening of the 2025 edition of the Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition, themed “Innovation for a Sustainable Digital Future: Accelerating Growth, Inclusion, and Global Competitiveness.
The bill, according to Shettima, represents a strategic leap toward embedding technology into the fabric of governance, economic planning, and national development. He noted that the new law would unlock a govtech revolution, characterized by smarter governance, greater transparency, and inclusive service delivery.
Shettima highlighted the government’s commitment to digital transformation, citing initiatives such as the integration of digital literacy into school curricula and the digitization of the informal sector. He also mentioned the 3 Million Technical Talent Program, aimed at developing world-class expertise and establishing Nigeria as a hub for digital skills.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, echoed Shettima’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for collaboration to achieve Nigeria’s digital transformation goals.
Tijani noted that the digital economy now contributes about 18% to Nigeria’s GDP, demonstrating the sector’s growing importance as a driver of national growth and economic diversification.
Tijani highlighted Nigeria’s global leadership in financial technology (fintech) innovation, citing the country’s advanced digital payment systems and thriving startup ecosystem.
He praised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for embedding technology and innovation as key pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, in his opening remarks, urged Nigerian youth to take the lead in driving Africa’s digital transformation.
He emphasized that the nation’s young population holds the key to a prosperous and inclusive future, and that harnessing their creativity and talent could power Nigeria and Africa into a new era of prosperity.
The Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition 2025 provided a platform for stakeholders to showcase their work, explore emerging trends, and drive the effective implementation of Nigeria’s national digital strategies for inclusive and sustainable growth.
