President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address the nation in a broadcast on Sunday at 7 am, according to a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson.
Television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are encouraged to connect to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to air the broadcast.
The address comes amid the #EndBadGovernance protests, which began on Thursday and are expected to last for 10 days. The protests are a response to the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians.
In the northern regions, the demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of looting and the destruction of both public and private properties. Conversely, protests in the southern regions have remained largely peaceful.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Tinubu to break his silence and address the nation in light of the ongoing protests. The PDP stated that the president’s lack of response has exacerbated public unrest.
“It is indeed worrisome that President Tinubu could remain silent as Nigerians are on the streets demanding good governance, protection, security, and welfare, which are the primary purposes of government,” the PDP declared.
#EndBadGovernance Protests Erupt Nationwide, Turn Violent in Northern States**
On August 1st, #EndBadGovernance protesters took to the streets in major states across Nigeria, demonstrating against poor governance and economic hardship. The protests continued on August 2nd and 3rd, extending into the 10-day demonstration.
Later on Thursday, the protests had turned violent in some northern states, including Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Abuja, and Niger. However, no protests were recorded in states such as Ekiti and most southeastern states.
