International Women’s Day 2025: JFC Calls for End to Misogyny, Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025, Journalists for Christ (JFC) International Outreach has reiterated its call to end misogyny and tech-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) against women.

In a statement signed by Lekan Otufodunrin, President of JFC and Secretary of WACC Africa Region, the organization revealed alarming findings from its social media monitoring report under the project “Countering Misogyny and Online Gender-Based Violence through Monitoring, Digital Counter-Narratives, and Advocacy Actions.”

The project, supported by the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) and Bread for the World – German Protestant Agency for Diaconia, confirmed a significant rise in digital attacks on women.

<span;>> “We found many cases of unwarranted misogynistic comments and TFGBV against women. Our focused group discussions with professionals, students, persons with disabilities, and men and women from various sectors revealed the extent of this issue. Many participants shared personal experiences of online misogyny and gender-based violence,” the statement read.

The Effects of Online Misogyny and Gender-Based Violence on Women

JFC highlighted the devastating consequences of online misogyny, including:

Forcing women to conform to societal pressures, often against their will.

Weakening women’s confidence and discouraging public participation.

Causing psychological distress, leading to self-doubt and stalled ambitions.

Reinforcing stereotypes that limit women’s growth and opportunities.

Triggering depression, suicidal thoughts, and social stigma.

Urgent Actions to Tackle Online Gender-Based Violence

To #AccelerateAction in line with IWD 2025, JFC recommends:
✅ Raising awareness and educating people on the dangers of misogyny.
✅ Supporting victims and taking a stand against online abuse.
✅ Engaging men and boys in advocacy efforts for gender respect.
✅ Involving religious and community leaders to challenge harmful beliefs.
✅ Promoting counter-narratives that support gender equality.
✅ Advocating for stronger policies and legal actions against TFGBV.
✅ Encouraging responsible social media behavior and digital literacy.
✅ Incorporating gender equality education in schools.
✅ Expanding media coverage on gender-based violence to drive societal change.
✅ Building partnerships with organizations and policymakers for collective action.
