The Agbura community of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have showcased a multimillion naira self-help shore embarkment and flood prevention project executed by the community.
Speaking in the community yesterday while conducting newsmen on a tour of the project, paramount ruler of the community, HRH E. N. Daufa(Ikile XIII) said the project became necessary as perennial floods have continued to wreck unabated havoc on to the community.
He said all efforts to get support from a multinational oil firm operating in the area have yielded no fruits, alleging also that Government’s environmental related agencies and parastatals have not shown any commitment in ameliorating the plights of the community, hence the community pooled resources together for execution of the project.
He said: “Every year Agbura community has been the worst hit in Yenagoa and its environs by this perennial floods. We’ve cried to Oando Plc, the oil firm operating in this area to do shore embarkment and protection works on our river bank to prevent floods in the community but they’ve not shown any interest.
“We’ve also severally met Government agencies and parastatals to come to the aid of the community to no avail. This community is the worst hit by the perennial floods within the Yenagoa metropolis.
“We want to again call on the Government and Oando Plc to help us. We’ve been spending millions from the little the community have to executive this project on yearly basis, but this is not enough. The project is still far from being completed.
“Each year in anticipation of the flood we’ve been gradually executing this project without help from neither the government nor the oil firm operating in this area”.
