A fire broke out on Wednesday evening at the Metro FM studio within Radio Nigeria’s Broadcasting House in Ikoyi, Lagos, causing panic but prompting a swift response from emergency services.
The fire, which started around 5:00 PM, quickly engulfed parts of the building in smoke, triggering an immediate evacuation and emergency response. Firefighters arrived at the scene with two fire trucks, but after exhausting their initial water supply, additional tankers were deployed to contain the flames.
The source of the fire is yet to be determined, but it reportedly started within the Metro FM studio. Staff from Radio Nigeria and Voice of Nigeria (VON) collaborated to minimize risks, switching off office lights to prevent electrical hazards and ensuring a coordinated evacuation.
Security agencies, including the police and military, secured the premises to enable unhindered firefighting efforts. Their presence maintained order as emergency teams worked to control the blaze.
Speaking on the incident, the Chairman of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) at the Voice of Nigeria Broadcasting House, Ikoyi Chapter, expressed gratitude for the timing of the fire. “Thank God this incident happened during the day, allowing for quick response and visibility. All VON facilities remain intact, and we are grateful for the collective effort to prevent further damage,” he said.
No injuries have been reported, but the extent of damage to the Metro FM studio and adjacent areas remains unclear. Emergency teams are still at the site, assessing the situation and ensuring full containment of the fire.
Authorities have reassured the public that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and prevent future occurrences. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
