The Bayelsa state sector command of the Federal Roads Safety Corps,FRSC has reeled out activities to commemorate the 2021 edition of the World day for road traffic accident victims.
National Wire which covered the events in Yenagoa reports that the sector commander, CC Ibrahim Alhassan Usman and Men and officers of the command are set to hold both Juma’at prayers and church service Friday this week and Sunday next week as part of activities to commemorate the day.
In a chat with Newsmen, the sector commander described the day as important, saying it is a time of calm reflection for the FRSC,drivers and passengers, noting that the FRSC would use the opportunity to carry out more public enlightenment programmes on the causes of road traffic accident.
National Wire learnt that the United Nations had earlier in 2005 set aside a day for the rememberance of road traffic accident victims.
The sector commander said: “To commemorate the day, this year the FRSC organized a week long activity with the theme: Act for low speed/ act for low speed streets.
“With these slogan, remember, support, act to remember the lost souls and sensitize the living on the need to stem the tide for road traffic crashes.
“This year’s edition marks the start of a new decade of action for road safety, 2021-2030 during which this world rememberance will play a very important role.
“The aim of this year’s world day of rememberance of road traffic victims, the Commander stated was to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families, promote evidence based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries,as well as remember all people murdered or seriously injured through road accidents and advocate for better support for road traffic accident victims and their families, respectively.
In the same vein, the sector commander has again called on motorists and passengers in the state to maintain low speed. He said low speed is one of the panaceas for ensuring a road traffic accident free and safer state.
