The Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Olusola Eleka, is set to donate textbooks to all public secondary schools in Ekiti State.
The books will be presented to the schools through the officials of the ministry of education at the maiden edition of Ekiti Book Picnic, which will hold at the Fajuyi Memorial Park, Ado Ekiti on March 28, 2018.
Professor Olusola made the promise to donate the books after writing the forewords to a book titled ‘Ekiti Kete: One People, Two Generations’, written by Mr. Aduralere Oluwagbohunmi.
He said, “as an academic and Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, I will work on the production of significant copies of the book to be donated at no cost to all Secondary Schools and Tertiary institutions in Ekiti State as part of the legacies of the present government of Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose towards the recovery, rediscovery and rejuvenation of our known heritage of good culture and academic excellence in Ekiti State,”
The organiser of the Book Picnic, Mr. Aduralere Oluwagbohunmi, said EduLink Concepts plans to give out one million textbooks to residents of Ekiti State and all the participants in the book picnic will be entitled to at least a free textbook and will also have the privilege of attending a symposium on the Use of Time. The book picnic is one of EduLink Concepts’ 10-point non-governmental agenda for the restoration of Ekiti glory.
Aduralere noted that “Ekiti is known as the intellectual capital pool of Nigeria and known for producing the highest number of professors per square meter in Nigeria. Everything must be done to keep the fire of academic excellence burning”.
He stressed that one of the ways to achieve that is to return to old days when book used to be the best friend of the people.
“You see, we are not just giving out books, we are also sensitising people on how they can invest their time and get meaningful result in life.” he said.
Aduralere, who has equally organised sensitisation lecture on the use of time for many secondary schools in Ekiti State, further stated that the academic revival that Ekiti needs cannot be left into the hand of government alone.
“If Ekiti would rise and remain on top of Nigeria’s ladder of academic excellence, we all have a role to play. The academic revival that Ekiti State requires at the moment cannot be handled by the government alone. And if we fail to act, in four decades from now, our cemeteries will be richer in values, virtues and intellects than our secondary schools and universities.”
The Book Picnic is the first of its kind in the state.
