The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ben Kalu, has praised President Bola Tinubu for signing the South-east Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Mr. Kalu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for assenting to the bill, urging the South-east region to support the president.
President Tinubu signed the SEDC and the North-west Development Commission (NWDC) Bills into law on Wednesday. The deputy speaker, who sponsored the SEDC bill, highlighted the significance of the commission in rebuilding the region, which was heavily affected by the civil war 54 years ago.
“The commission will be charged with the responsibility of receiving and managing funds from the federation account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damage suffered by the region as a result of the civil war,” the statement read. “The commission will also address ecological problems and other environmental or developmental challenges in the South-east states, including Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.”
With the establishment of the SEDC and NWDC, Nigeria now has four regional development commissions. The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North-east Development Commission (NEDC) were previously created to address developmental issues in their respective zones. Meanwhile, bills for the South-west Development Commission and the North-central Development Commission are currently pending before the National Assembly.
