In a momentous event steeped in rich tradition and cultural pride, Nigerian businessman, insurance professional, and entrepreneur, Chief Obayomi Oluwasegun Sowande, was on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, formally installed as the Silemo Egba, one of the revered chieftaincy titles in Egbaland.
The prestigious ceremony, held at the historical Ake Palace grounds in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, captains of industry, and members of various elite Egba clubs and associations. It marked a significant cultural milestone for the Egba people and a proud moment for the Sowande family lineage.
Born on January 15, 1962, Chief Sowande hails from a distinguished Egba heritage. His paternal roots trace back to Agbole Ohoro in Ake, while his maternal lineage originates from Agbole Loshi in Itoko, both historically significant quarters of Abeokuta. His installation as Silemo Egba is widely seen as a symbolic homecoming and a celebration of legacy, excellence, and service to the community.
A Man Of Many Hats
Chief Sowande’s journey from the classrooms of St. Luke’s Primary School to the corporate boardrooms of Nigeria and the United Kingdom is a story of grit, brilliance, and determination. He is an alumnus of Ibadan Boys High School, Federal Polytechnic Akure, and holds international qualifications from Coventry University and the Greenwich School of Management Studies in the UK.
His professional career began at Guinea Insurance Company in Nigeria before progressing to Liverpool Victoria Insurance in the UK. Over the years, he has expanded his footprint into logistics and diversified services, currently serving as Director at Sow Cargo Services, Sowoba Services Nigeria Limited, and Reserve Moore Nigeria Limited.
Sowande’s installation was described by many as a deserving honor, acknowledging not just his business acumen but his active role in civic and social organizations. He is a notable member of the Abeokuta Golf Club, Abeokuta Club, Abeokuta Sports Club, Anglican Christian Fellowship of St. Peter’s Church Ake, and the Abeokuta Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The ceremony was presided over by the Egba Chieftaincy Conferment Committee, led by Chief Alani Bankole, the Apena Egba, with other notable chiefs including Chief Akani Akinwale (Baagbimo Egba), Chief Oluwatosin Fadare (Seriki Egba), and Chief Prof. Kayode Oyesiku (Fimosakin Egba and Secretary), among others, playing key roles in the rites and formalities.
Each step of the installation, from the symbolic dressing to the spiritual and cultural blessings, was conducted with precision and reverence, reinforcing the deep respect accorded to traditional institutions in Egbaland.
Speaking after his conferment, Chief Sowande expressed deep gratitude to the Alake and the entire Egba Traditional Council, pledging to uphold the values of the title and to use his influence and experience to further the development of Egba land.
“This is not just a title, but a call to serve, to preserve our culture, and to contribute meaningfully to our collective progress,” he said.
