Journalists For Christ (JFC) fellowship has convened its October meeting, focusing on the Book of Esther.
The session highlighted leadership lessons, God’s providence, and the role of individuals in advancing His kingdom.
In his opening remarks, Dayo Emmanuel, Admin Secretary of JFC, provided a background on Esther’s story, noting her humble beginnings as a Jewish slave girl during the exile of the Jews. He explained how God used Esther to rescue the Jews from annihilation, despite the difficult circumstances of their exile.
“The story begins with King Ahasuerus’ anger towards Queen Vashti for her refusal to obey him, leading to her removal as queen,” Emmanuel said. “This teaches us that in any position we hold, someone better can replace us. It’s our availability that God uses, and if we fail in our duties, someone else will take our place, just like Queen Vashti was replaced by Esther.”
Emmanuel highlighted the need for caution and humility, warning against becoming too familiar with authority to the point of disobedience. “Familiarity breeds contempt,” he said, referencing Queen Vashti’s public defiance of the king, which ultimately led to her downfall. He also compared Vashti’s situation to that of Michal, David’s wife, who was punished for mocking her husband’s worship of God.
Esthers Life of Obedience
In his contribution, President of JFC, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, noted that Esther was obedient.
He said, “She diligently followed the instruction she was given by Mordecia, not to disclose being a Jew and by the head of the Eunuchs on what to do when she meets the King.”
Continuing, he said, “Another person might have wanted to do what pleases them but she didn’t and it was for her own good”
Lessons from Leadership
Pastor David Alabi, Chaplain of JFC, echoed Emmanuel’s point, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling one’s responsibilities. He cited the example of King Saul, who lost his throne because of disobedience, and compared it to Vashti’s dismissal. “If we don’t fulfill our duties, someone else will take over,” he said. “Like Vashti, who lost her position to Esther, any leader can be replaced when they neglect their responsibilities.”
Esther’s Rise and Mordecai’s Wisdom
Writer and Book Editor, Olumide Akinola, in his contribution delved into Esther’s rise to power, emphasizing how she was chosen for her wisdom and beauty. He also spoke on the role of Mordecai, who raised Esther like his own daughter and provided her with guidance. Mordecai’s righteousness was evident when he exposed a plot to assassinate the king, demonstrating that doing what is right can yield great rewards.
“Mordecai saved the king from two conspirators, and God honored his righteousness,” Olumide noted. “This shows that God’s principles apply universally. If we do our work with integrity, God will reward us in due time.”
Women in Leadership
Editor of Social Development News, Mrs. Funmi Falobi discussed the significance of Esther’s story in the context of women and leadership. She highlighted how Esther used her position as queen to save the Jews, showcasing the impact women can have in leadership roles. “Whether male or female, we must strive for excellence in our work,” Falobi said. “Once we are in leadership positions, we have the opportunity to influence decisions that align with God’s kingdom.”
She also pointed out the challenges women face in attaining leadership roles, but stressed that with God’s help and the support of mentors, like Mordecai was to Esther, women can overcome these obstacles and make a lasting impact.
Mentorship and Discretion
The conversation shifted to the theme of mentorship, with Emmanuel praising Mordecai’s role in Esther’s life. He highlighted that Mordecai raised Esther as his own, investing in her development and preparing her for her pivotal role. “Mordecai’s investment in Esther saved the Jews at a critical moment,” Emmanuel said. He contrasted Mordecai’s selflessness with the attitudes of some people today, who focus only on their own children or interests.
Chaplain David Alabi added that Mordecai’s humility and wisdom in his position as a gatekeeper were key to his eventual promotion. “Mordecai’s lowly position as a gatekeeper allowed him access to valuable information, positioning him for elevation,” Alabi noted. He advised the fellowship to follow Mordecai’s example, working diligently in whatever roles they find themselves.
Alabi also spoke on discretion, noting that in the current age, journalists must sometimes gather information without revealing their professional identities. “Like Esther, who initially kept her Jewish identity hidden, there are times when discretion is necessary to achieve a greater good,” he advised.
Strategic Leadership
Sanmi Falobi, Programme Manager at the International Press Centre, Lagos, added to the discussion by emphasizing the importance of strategy and timing in leadership, using Esther’s example. “Esther didn’t rush to make demands. She waited for the right moment to present her case to the king,” Falobi explained. He urged the group to adopt a strategic approach in their workplaces and to be mindful of when to act. “We must position ourselves wisely and seize opportunities, just like Esther did.”
Pastor Timi Ajayi built on this, linking Esther’s story to modern management principles. He explained how Mordecai identified the strengths within Esther and positioned her for success, noting that good leaders recognize potential and help others achieve it. “In management, we talk about SWOT analysis—Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Mordecai recognized Esther’s strengths and used them to advance both her and their community,” Ajayi said.
He emphasized that success in leadership is a communal effort, as seen in Esther’s decision to involve the Jewish community through prayer and fasting. “Esther knew that her beauty and position wouldn’t be enough on their own. She needed the support of her community,” Ajayi said. “Similarly, we must rely on our communities for strength and support.”
Closing Reflections
In his concluding remarks, Emmanuel reflected on Mordecai’s wisdom and humility, noting how his lowly position as a gatekeeper allowed him to access crucial information and position Esther for success. “No matter how small or insignificant our roles may seem, God has placed us there for a reason,” Emmanuel said. “We must be ready to speak up when necessary and approach our tasks with wisdom and tact.”
Vivian Akinyosoye, a media consultant, noted the importance of mentorship in Esther’s story, particularly in shaping her character and decision-making. She also highlighted the importance of recognizing the roles of lower-level staff in organizations, as they often have access to valuable information. “Mordecai’s strategic positioning as a gatekeeper was key to his success,” Akinyosoye said.
The meeting concluded with a reminder to study the Book of Esther more closely, seeking lessons that can be applied to both personal and professional life. “Let us take the lessons from Esther and Mordecai and apply them in our daily lives,” Alabi urged, praying, “May God give us the wisdom to lead well and use our positions for His glory.”
