Cattle rustlers kill 5, injured many in Niger village

Suspected cattle rustlers attacked Gbada community in Kaure, Shiroro local government area of Niger state, killing five people and injuring many, National Wire gathered on Monday.

The incidence occurred in the early hours of yesterday as the attackers, numbering over 30, who stormed the community at about2: 30 and 3.am when the villagers were still deep in sleep, also rustled undisclosed number of cattle, our reporter further learnt .

Further checks revealed that Gbada and environ is on the  border with nieghbouring  Kaduna state have come under severe siege by cattle rustlers in recent times who were believed to be fleeing joint military operation in that state in the past.

The Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State at the National Assembly Abuja , Senator David Umaru said he got a distress call from some members of the community in the early hours of yesterday as he was intimated of the attack and he said promptly alerted the police high command in the state.

The Senator confirmed the figure but said many of the villagers were still missing, even as some houses were allegedly set ablaze in the bloody attack.

Also the chairman of Shiroro local government area, Hon Hassan Jagaba, who confirmed the attack, said the onslaught by the marauding rustlers was devastating.

“On the receipt of information of the invasion, I have to alert the police at Zumba division, who mobilized their men to the affected community but the attackers had fled with the cattle they rustled before the police got there,” he explained.

The Spokesman of the state police command, DSP Bala Elkana also confirmed the incident, saying that the invaders fled to the neighbouring Kaduna State.

He stated this in a brief interview with our reporter in Minna yesterday, adding that the anti-cattle rustling team was combing the forest through which the fleeing rustlers escaped.

Elkana however stated that no arrest has been made so far as the anti- cattle rustling police team was still combing the forest with the view to arrest the fleeing mauraders in a bid to recover the rustled cattle.
