Bullion van: Mixed reactions as policemen return lost N5m

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the recovery of N5m by men of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force).

The said amount was recovered after falling off a moving bullion van along Lagos State House of Assembly Complex, Alausa, Ikeja.

Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force Superintendent of Police, Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that two Police officers Sergeant Ogunbiyi Agbabu and Inspector Ehezieka Abiona, attached to the agency, made the recovery.

Egbeyemi therefore, implored the Police and Lagos State Government to commend the officers for their honesty and integrity. The chairman also requested that the owner of any bullion van that drove through the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex between November to December 2015 with missing N5 million should come forward with cogent proof of ownership.

Meanwhile, while some Nigerians have commended the police officers for showing integrity, others have different opinions. Olayinka Binta, a trader at the popular Balogun market in Lagos, said, “It is not common to find policemen with such virtues of integrity. Even we that we are not policemen, how many of us would return such amount?”

Another Lagos resident, Cornelius Mathew is of the opinion that no one is sure of the exact amount. “We were not there, but only the eyes of God sees what no one can see. How are we sure the money was not more than that,” he asked skeptically.
