Bauchi Pledges Action To End Gender Based Violence

The chairperson, Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, Hajia Zainab Babban Takko has promised to commence action to eradicate gender based violence (GBV) in the local government.

Takko made the commitment when the management team of WE AID INITIATIVE paid her a working visit to discuss areas of collaboration between the local government and the organisation.

Speaking at the meeting, the
Executive Director of We Aid Initiative-Barrister Gambo Yakubu Wakili and the Director of Programs, Yusuf Burga expressed concerns on the increasing number of women who have lost their lives as a result of domestic violence and other forms of assault perpetuated by their partners.

Barrister Wakili said the recent death of a woman named Rejoice in Birsho /Miriam Ward of the local government is a wake up call for government to put an end to the menace.

She also introduced the initiative; MURYAN MATA- a victim/community/stakeholder approach at combatting rape and domestic violence and other forms of assaults against women and girls, a brainchild of WE AID INITIATIVE.

Both parties highlighted the urgent need for proactive measures which includes the active engagement of women, community heads, religious, traditional and state agencies to combat GBV and ensure the safety and well-being of women in their households and community.

The Chairperson expressed deep concern over the prevalence of such atrocities and conveyed a sincere commitment towards putting an end to GBV.

The Chairperson pledged to forge strong partnerships with women and women-based organizations in the state to tackle these challenges collectively.

She applauded WE AID INITIATIVE and assured the organization and its partners of the local government’s full backing and support including active participation, policy recommendation, implementation to address GBV effectively in Bauchi Local Government.
