Following the establishment of a Justice Centre for Gender Based Violence in Bauchi State, a non-governmental organization, WEAID Initiative has established a register of volunteer lawyers who are willing to provide pro bono services to victims of sexual harassment and Gender Based Violence in the state.
The situation of Gender Based Violence in Bauchi took a turn for the worse when a reported wife bartering incidence led to the death of one madam Rejoice in Birshi village on December 2023. Many other unreported incidences of violence against women are rife in the state.
WEAID Initiative recently conveyed a stakeholders meeting in the state to call for immediate action against the rising incidences of Gender Based Violence.
Gambo Wakili, Executive Director of WEAID Initiative, notes that the situation demands an urgent action in order to protect victims. Wakili said: ” we are building a strong coalition of stakeholders across the state, from lawyers, the media, the police, and government to end violence against women especially.”
“Our organization has established a register of lawyers that are willing to lrovide legal support. We are also working with the Nigerian Police in the State to help strengthen reporting and investigation, ” said Wakili.
The commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Muhammed Lawan, in meeting with the WEAID Initiative, called for a collective action against the menace of Gender based violence. Lawan applauded WEAID Initiative efforts at providing a lawyer register and a call-in phone number at the Gender desk of the Police station, so that citizens can call to report cases.
