Barely hours after the announcement of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the death of Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was announced.
Reliable sources close to the Awujale’s Palace in Ijebu-Ode, as well as senior officials in the Ogun State Government, confirmed the passing of the revered monarch on Sunday.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. He was widely regarded as a symbol of wisdom and an influential voice among Yoruba monarchs and across the nation.
As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Official announcements from the palace and the Ogun State Government are expected soon.
The late monarch and Buhari are said to be friends during their time. Nigerians have been in mourning mood since Sunday afternoon.
