Commercial activities came to a sudden stop for about 30 minutes at the Alagbaka,Akure, branch of First Bank, after a man held the place to a ransom over alleged illegal deductions from his account,Orange FM has reported.
The man, said to be hefty and in his 30s, arrived the bank at about 1pm on Friday and headed straight for the customer care section where he dealt one of the personnel, a young lady, a slap for not doing enough to solve his problem.
His complaint was “constant debiting” of his account without explanation, according to the Akure based radio station.
The man then headed for the bank’s counter, where he destroyed no fewer than five computers, smashed one of the money counting machines and ordered all the workers to leave immediately.
“I will bring down this bank. Everybody should leave now. I am a citizen of the country. Why will they deduct my money without explanation? F**k everybody here,” he was reported to have said as he brandished his passport while confusion enveloped the bank.
Customers as well all as workers all scampered for safety, thinking his action was a prelude to a robbery operation.
The man also attacked the bank’s security personnel who escaped immediately.
A soldier who was in the bank at the time of the incident walked up to the man and pleaded that he allow the authorities to handle the case in an amicable manner but he bluntly refused.
Infuriated by his action, the soldier went out of the bank and came in with no fewer than six heavily armed mobile policemen who immediately descended on the man.
Headbut, kicks, punches, gun butts, and tear gas were some of the measures resorted to by the enraged security agents before the man was bundled into a waiting van,according to the report.
The police authorities were yet to comment on the incident as at press time.
