Education, Sensitaization, Can Eliminate VVF in Nigeria -Dr. Abubakar
A Consultant Gynaecologist and wife of the Niger State Governor , Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello has said that with increased education and sensitaization, Vesico Vaginal Fistula(VVF) could be eliminated in Nigeria.
Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello who doubles as the Founder, ‘RAiSE Foundation” a Cancer screening centre, Minna stated this in Bida Local Government of the state where she opened a VVF Camp to conduct surgeries for 30 women with the condition.
She stated further that when people were aware of the causes of VVF, it would go a long way towards eliminating it from the society.
She stressed that prolonged labour is one of the main causes of VVF, emphasising further that ‘prolonged labour is the major cause of VVF and instead of going to the Primary Health Care Centers close to them, they try to deliver at home which leads to complications’
The Wife of the Governor said,’ eventually, when they are taken to the hospital, the might have lost the child and then developed the condition’.
Dr. Abubakar also stated that her Foundation has commenced plans to set up a Fistula Center that will serve the North Central Geo-Political zone of the country, as she added that there is none in the zone.
She thereby expressed optimism that she is hoping that government will make the Center, the center for the zone as there is only one in the North East.
She called on Nigerians to join her in the fight against VVF saying, ‘it is everybody’s business to join in the sensitization and educating people on the need to access primary health care centers.
