Defying earlier forecasts of lightning, heavy winds, and thunderstorms that usually characterises first rainfall ofbthe year, the rain, a tranquil descent lasting around 40 minutes from 3:40 am to 4:20 am, held its own significance.
Prominent areas such as Omi-Adio, situated in Ido Local Government Area, and Ibadan South West Local Government Area played host to this invigorating rainfall.
Amidst the community, a chorus of joy echoed as residents deemed it a “shower of blessing in the new year.” Mr. Paul Ademola, a denizen of Omi Adio, emphasised the reprieve it provided from evening heat and mild harmattan in the morning. He further underscored the urgency for addressing the construction of untarred roads, a source of health concerns within the locality.
Meanwhile, in Lagos, Nigeria’s erstwhile capital and current economic nucleus, the persistence of day and night time heat suggested the imminent arrival of early rainfall in the new year.
Lagos, being a coastal city, traditionally experiences precipitation sooner due to its proximity to the Atlantic and South West trade wind that distributes rainfalll.
Wednesday witnessed temperatures soaring as high as 34°C in the metropolis, intensifying the anticipation for the impending rain to bring much-needed relief to Lagosians.
