The Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) Bayelsa state sector command has flagged-off its ember months campaigns in Bayelsa State.
National Wire.learnt that the Federal agency also faulted night journeys,saying that it was the cause of most auto related accidents on the roads.
Speaking during a programme held to commemorate the 2021 ember months campaigns,the state sector commander of the Corps,Ibrahim Usman Alhasan underscored the importance of the campaign,saying all road users,private drivers,commuters and passengers must take their lives seriously especially during the ember months seasons.
He said the programme was held to sensitize road users on safety measures to forestall crashes and road traffic related incidents during the ember seasons.
NationalWire reports that the 2021 ember months campaigns were held at the central motor park at Ekeki in the Yenagoa metropolis.
Flagging-off the campaigns which has as its theme : “Maintain Safe Speed , Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience”, the Roads safety boss added that the essence of kick-starting the campaigns earlier this year was aimed at deliberately educating the motoring public to make the year 2021 ember months unique and crash free, just as he advised that motorists adhere strictly to road traffic regulations.
CC. Ibrahim further noted that it was imperative to start the sensitization early as people travel frequently to their respective town and villages to meet their loved ones, particularly those working outside the state which makes leads to the surge in vehicular traffic.
He noted:”Avoid overloading,over speeding,reckless drivin and fatigue.
” Use of bad wipers,mechanical deficient vehicles , expired tyres cannot be ruled out as critical offences and causes of road accidents”.
Meanwhile,the Bayelsa state governor,Senator Douye Diri, represented by the Mayor of Yenagoa, Nimizuo Orupaye commended the FRSC for the early campaign,describing it as apt.
He urged road users within the state to adhere to all safety measures to forestall road crashes, assuring the state’s collaboration with the agency to a continued sensitization of road users in ensuring that vehicles are road worthy and were found to be obeying regulations governing driving.
He added that:”to avoid road crashes especially during festive period with high traffic flow and even after,we must continue to partner the FRSC to ensure that our roads were crashes free”.
In same regard, the Minority Leader of the Bayelsa state House of Assembly and coordinator of the Bayelsa sector command of the FRSC Special Marshal, Hon. Douglas Awudulu has decried the rising pace of night travels and its ills,warning road users and passengers alike against night journeys.
“Am not saying that accidents don’t occur in the afternoons, but that of the nights are usually very dangerous”, he said.
He pledged the continued support of the Special Marshals to the Federal Road Safety Corps to ensure that accidents were minimised, urging drivers and travellers to avoid night travels,just as he advised both private and commercial drivers to avoid over speeding, drunk-driving and other causes that could lead to accidents which has led to the death and sustaining of injuries by many.
In a goodwill message, the National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW),speaking through its Assistant Secretary, comrade Ojo Rapheal commended the FRSC for the programme,assuring the agency of their continuous partnership towards ensuring safer roads before,during and after the ember months.
Highpoints of the event were a drama presentation on the need to adhere to road safety measures by the NYSC Road safety club as well as goodwill meassages by other sister security agencies in the state and the Bayelsa state Ministry of Transport,respectively.
