The National President of the Nigeria Union ofJournalists (NUJ) Chief Chris Isiguzo has decried the level of insecurity in Nigeria even as he added that it was threatening national life and unity.
Similarly the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Belllo has charged the media to abide by the ethical code of Journalism for unity and progress of the country.
The duo spoke at the weekend during the NUJ Niger state council’s Press week and lecture with the theme: “Media and Insecurity, Niger state in perspective”.
While decrying the security situation in the country, Chief Isiguzo posited that “the worsening insecurity we are facing is threatening our national life and unity as a people”.
Chief Isiguzo stressed the need for the media to galvanise support for the fight against insecurity and also assumed the true role of the fourth estate of the realm by holding those in positions of authority accountable to the people.
“There is the need for us as journalists to speak against all forms of insecurity and criminality we are facing in Nigeria today. This will prompt the federal government to tackle the menace decisively,” he declared
Isiguzo advised journalists in the country to report insecurity in such a way that governments at all levels will live up to their responsibilities to tackle it head long instead of worsening the situation.
According to him “we must protect Nigeria because we don’t have any other place to call home.You can never be comfortable in a foreign land the way you will be in your own land,” .
On his part, the Niger state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Bello represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, charged journalists to always abide by the ethics of the profession in carrying out their jobs
He said that the state government was doing everything possible to equip its media organisations to ensure maximum output from journalists operating in the state.
