The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi,has said his Command has “explicit confidence” in the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idriss.
Imohinmi, in a statement made available to National Wire on Thursday, noted the reassurance was necessary because Idriss,”a lawyer by training,” and “a firm believer in the rule of law” has helped in “no small measure the institution of peace in the country.”
According to Imohimi, the successes his Command recorded in the fight against crime and criminality in the state were possible because of the policy objective and directives of the IGP.
It is noteworthy,however,that the Senate on Wednesday declared Idriss an “enemy of democracy unfit to hold any public office in Nigeria and abroad.”
The declaration was made because of the IGP’s failure to appear before the Senate in person to give explanations on the security situation in the country.
The police boss has,in a swift reaction, described the Senate declaration as a deliberate “blackmail and witch-hunting, with mischievous motives to hand-twist him to pervert the end of justice.”
The Commissioner listed the IGP’s successes to include community policing, which he said is the fulcrum on which all crime fighting strategies of the command, and indeed the entire Nigeria Police, revolves.
“The command has explicit confidence in the IGP and in what he is doing for the country in the war against crime and in his quest to restore the police to its pride of place as the number one crime fighting organisation in the country,” Imohinmi declared.
The CP said his boss is a man with complete respect to the law,adding that Idriss always emphasises that the police derives its powers from the constitution and therefore must be obedient to law and order.
“Since his assumption of office, the IGP has helped in no small measure, the institution of peace in the country, improvement in the welfare and standard of living of officers and men of the police and smooth running of the Force through his directives contained in the Force Order and Force Administrative Instructions.
“I therefore call on Nigerians to support the Inspector General of Police in the onerous task of policing the nation and the restoration of peace, law and order in the country, ” he stated further.
