The 22-year-old Pakistani activist and youngest winner of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, Malala Yousafzai on Friday graduated from Oxford University.
She graduated with honours in Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree.
Expressing her joy for graduating on Twitter while sharing a cake with family members, Malala said, “Hard to express my joy and gratitude right now as I completed my Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree at Oxford.”
Malala began studying at Oxford in October 2017 after she was formally accepted earlier that year at one of its colleges, Lady Margaret Hall, where Benazir Bhutto, first Pakistani Prime Minister studied in the 1970s.
Although she didn’t immediately say if she was going to be working, she averred that she would need more sleep, read books, and engage in Netflix.
Yousafzai, was shot on the head by the Taliban in 2012 when she was 15 because of her extreme criticism of the group to prevent girls from going to school.
Using BBC as a platform to express her angst while writing on its blog, she was encouraged by her father who runs a school that continued to educate girls.
After her treatment at Queen’s Elizabeth Hospital, Yousafzai and her family relocated permanently to UK that same year.
Due to her advocacy, at the age 17 in 2014, Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian campaigner for children’s rights, jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize.
However, in 2018, she visited Pakistan for the first time after she was shot by the Taliban where she gave an emotional speech and said “For the last five years, I have dreamed of being able to set foot in my country.”
At Oxford, Malala Yousafzai participated in active sports where she joined the cricket club; the Oxford Union, a debating society; and the Oxford Pakistan Society.
