World Thyroid Day: NGO Holds Awareness Lecture On Thyroid, Genetics

A non governmental organisation, Thyroid Awareness and Support Initiative (TASI) is set to hold it’s 3rd annual public lecture tagged “Thyroid and Genetics” on Tuesday, 23rd May, 2023 in Lagos.

According to the Founder/President of the organisation, Amb. Iruoma Ofortube, the event is scheduled for 10am at the NECA House, Hakeem Balogun street, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

The awareness program which is jointly convened by TASI and The Thyroid Care Association of Nigeria, is organised to commemorate the International Thyroid Awareness Week and World Thyroid Day by sensitising the public with facts about thyroid while debunking myths and superstitions about the disease.

To speak at the event, is the President Thyroid Federation International, Mr. Ashok Basheen, an expert in the field, Dr. Kunle Megbuwawon, Head of Strategy and Commercial Services at ME Cure Limited and Dr. Adefemi O. Afolabi, Consultant General and Endocrine Surgeon at the University College Hospital, Ibadan as the keynote speaker.

According to an online source, Thyroid diseases affect an estimated 200 million people worldwide with
The Republic of Korea having the highest incidence rates (149.8 new cases per 100,000 women).

Meanwhile, hyperthyroidism according to experts is curable and has a permanent treatment.
