Stunning facts have emerged why some notorious armed robbers on Monday attacked the Igueben Police Area Command in Edo State.

An indigene of the community where the station is domicile who spoke on condition of annoymity with Nationalwire online explained that the robbers attacked the station to set free two members of their gang who were said to have been arrested and detained by the police.

It was learnt that two members of the gang were apprehended for an undisclosed offence by the police.

He further explained that the criminals had written to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to release their gang members or face their wrath.

Unperturbed, the DPO was said to have, instead of releasing such hardened criminals to appease their nefarious threats, he rather transferred the suspects to the State Police Command in Benin City.

Ostensibly angered by the DPO’s lack of empathy to the gang to set them free, they decided to storm the station that night with a view to setting the suspects free, unknown to them they the suspects have been relocated outside the station in Igueben.

Investigation revealed that sensing that the police had played a fast one on them as they couldn’t achieve their aim for attacking the station, they allegedly vent anger on the station; turned their guns on anybody in sight and wrecked havoc; killing two policemen and a civilian while an okada rider was hit by bullet on his arm.

During their dastardly attack, a police Inspector identified as Monday Asuata, and Constable Esangbedo Ezekiel, who recently passed out of the police training college before being posted to Igueben were killed.

However, Sergeant Ehichoya, who suffered serious gun shot injuries, was said to have been rushed to the hospital and was in a critical condition while another Constable was declared missing.

Besides the loss of lives, the robbers brazenly carted away a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the station.

As the head of the station, it was learnt that the robbers after ransacking the cell and their partner in crime were not seen, they swiftly attacked the DPO with gun shots released on him but he was able to escape into the bush without been hit.

However, since they couldn’t succeed at rescuing their member, they went for any policeman in sight.

Our source further hinted that one of the civilians that was shot dead with his heart region shattered was said to have been some distance from the police station when the robbers struck.

On hearing the sounds of gun shot, he was said to have called a commercial motorcyclist to take him to the scene where the gun was been fired to ascertain what was going on.

“Incidentally, immediately the robbers sighted the okada rider, they released volley of shots, hitting him on his arm while his passenger attempted to escape but was unlucky as shots caught him, ripping his heart off.

“The unidentified victim was a member of one notorious cult group. Immediately his members heard about his death and deposited at the mortuary, they rushed to the General Hospital and threatened the mortuary attendant to open the facility.

“They turned the hospital upside down as they carried his remains up; called his name several times.

“With the dead remaining cold and there was no response to their calls, they lamented and dropped the remains before quitting the hospital.”

Attempt to get clarifications and updates from the Public Relations Officer, Edo State Police Command, DSP Chidi failed as he didn’t respond to the message sent to him.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the police has activated intelligence and other crack detectives with a view to tracking the criminals.
