President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a ₦15 billion take-off grant to support its development.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on 20th April, 2026, by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The approval aligns with provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which mandates the expansion of the institution beyond its current base in Wudil, Kano State, into a multi-campus system.
According to the statement, the intervention fund will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and will be deployed to critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training equipment.
The decision followed a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The meeting evaluated factors such as student intake capacity, funding considerations, academic standards, and the evolving manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force.
President Tinubu noted that the expansion of the Police Academy is expected to enhance institutional governance, improve the quality of policing education, and strengthen national security, especially as efforts continue to increase police recruitment nationwide.
