Three Suspects In Detention Over Death Of Naval Rating

The Western Naval Command, Apapa has disclosed the identity of three persons responsible for the death of a Naval Rating, Ordinary Seaman Akingbabohun SA, even as a detailed explanation on the circumstances that led to the death of the Rating attached to the Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Imeri, Ondo State was also revealed.

According to the Command’s Information Officer (CINFO), Commander Patrician Ochei explained on Wednesday that a team of policemen met the naval personnel, Ordinary Seaman Akingbabohun, lying unconscious by the roadside around Idoani town market area after being attacked by the hoodlums.

She gave the names of the suspects as: Mr Ayomide Sambo, 20 years from Kogi state, Mr Shagari Francis, 18 years from Nassarawa state and Mr Adeleke Johnson Fayomi, 20 years from Idoani-Ondo.

After the attack by the hoodlums, the victim was rushed to the General Hospital but later died after medical persons couldn’t revive him.

Part of the statement read, “On Tuesday, 27 June, 2023, the Idoani police on patrol found the unconscious body of Ordinary Seaman Akingbabohun SA a rating serving at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Imeri Ondo State, by the road side around Idoani town market area and rushed him to Idoani General Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the rating passed away after efforts by the hospital staff to revive him.

“According to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Idoani Police Division, who confirmed the incident, the rating was attacked by some hoodlums in Idoani, a search party from the Police Division in Idoani and the Nigerian Navy Secondary School were deployed and this lead to the arrest of three suspects who were at large at the time.

“The suspects are being interrogated, and written statements have been obtained from them and the suspects are still in police custody for further investigation and prosecution.

It would be recalled that some session of the media had gone viral with the story accusing and berating the Nigerian Navy personnel sacking Ondo Community over the death of their personnel.
