June 12: President Buhari Addresses Nation Tomorrow

Since rechristening June 12 as Democracy day, President Mohammadu Buhari will make a nationwide broadcast tomorrow by 7 am.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina disclosed this on Thursday in a two-paragraph statement in Abuja.

He implored all Television and radio stations as well as other electronic media outlets to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria respectively for the broadcast.

Since 1999, democracy day was marked on 29 May every year. However, in the spirit of honouring Chief Moshood Abiola, who was said to have won the June 12, 1993 general election that was annulled by the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, fuelled agitations to declare June 12 as Democracy Day.

As a mark of honour to Chief Abiola, who died while been held incommunicado by the late General Dani Abacha, President Buhari changed the date last year.
