Security Agencies Seek Support As NAS Focuses On Security

Security agencies in Ogun State have called on members of the public to take more seriously issues relating to security and be ready to supply information at all times to stem the tide of insecurity in the Nation.

The advice was given by representatives of the Directorate of State Security, DSS, the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC at a Citizen’s Summit, put together by the National Association of SeaDogs, NAS, Ogun State chapter at the Iwe-Iroyin House, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Speaking on the theme, “State of Insecurity in the Nation- the Ogun State Perspectives, Comptroller of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Ogun State Dorris Braimah who was represented by the Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, Tajudeen Ogunkanmi described insecurity as a global phenomenon which is not peculiar to only Nigeria.

He advised that security must be everybody’s business, saying “the immigration service was trying its best as the nations gatekeeper but needs the support and trust of the populace to succeed, for the betterment of the Nation”.

Assistant Commandant, Ajayi Phillips of the NSCDC who stood in for the state commandant, Hameed Abodurin urged Ogun residents to come together to fight insecurity which he said was a collective responsibility.

The DSS representative who noted that criminality was always on the increase during the ember Months identified, lack of security awareness, erosion of value system, abdication of parental responsibility and peer influence as some of the causes of insecurity.

In his own submission, the Ogun State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Comrade Yinka Folarin urged security agencies to respect the fundamental rights of any suspect in their custody and desist from prejudicial treatments.

He observed that the Nations borders are so porous while criminals are released when money exchange hands, stressing that it is saddening that bail is still not free despite the lip services paid to it.

According to him, “theoretically we know the right things, but in reality we don’t do the right things while lack of political will to fight insecurity has failed us as a people.”

“Robbers rob confidently when they know security agencies don’t have adequate facilities. In fact, Nigerians are willing to partner with security officials but are they safe when they give information?”

The Chairman of the Occasion, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo represented by Engr Tokunbo Odebunmi said it was shocking that people still take security with levity.

He advised every individual to be more security conscious and always report any strange movement in their vicinity.

The traditional ruler who advised parents to pay more attention towards instilling moral values in their children, enjoined all at the gathering to focus more on training the youth as the bedrock of every society.

Other stakeholders including the Iyaloja of , INEC representative, members of NAS and the general public also contributed to the interactive session.
