In a bid to ameliorate the hardship being experienced by the flood disaster victims in Niger State, presently living at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Zungeru, Wushishi Local Government Area of the State, the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) has donated some assorted relief materials worth several millions of Naria to them at camp over the weekend .
The National President of POWA and wife of Inspector General of Police, Mrs Asta Ibrahim Idris, disclosed this when she visited IDPs on Friday at the Central Primary School in Zungeru .
Explaining the reason for their visit, Idris said, ” as responsible mothers we are here to feel the pains and impact of your displacement from your homes, it is one of our social responsibilities to visit you and put a smiles on your face.”
The POWA President who donated 100 bags of rice, 100 matrasses, 100 pillows, 10 bags of slippers, 30 cartons of indomie noodles , 10 cartons of Vaseline body cream , 20 cartons of toilet soaps, 20 cartons of laundry soaps and 100 plastic buckets, said the gesture would lessen the burden of hopelessness being experienced by the IDPs that have forced them to seek for shelter in this camp”.
She applauded Governor Abubakar Bello, for ensuring that those displaced were catered for so that they will not in any way feel abandoned.
“It is my prayer that more public spirited individuals, corporate organizations and institutions of government will extend their hands of fellowship towards alleviating the sufferings of the affected persons living in this camp. ”
Governor Bello who was represented by the state Commissioner for Education , Hajiya Fatima Madugu, commended Mrs Asta Idris in conjunction with POWA for her humanitarian gesture.
Bello thereby called on stakeholders to join hands with state and Federal Governments to assist IDPs to recover from the trauma of flood disaster.
According to him, “Flood is a natural disaster that befall individuals and communities at any given time. It is inevitable and must be accepted in good faith. ”
Niger State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Yakadi, also commended POWA and the wife of lGP for their kind gesture, noted that their visit marked another milestone in the history of the State’ s Command of the Nigeria Police Force.
He said that the state governor has assisted the command to reduce crime and criminalities in the state to bearest minimum and promised that police personnel at the command will carry out their duties in a well dignified manner and as enshrined in the Nigeria’s Constitution
Meanwhile, in her goodwill message, the coordinator of the camp, Saratu Waziri, expressed appreciation to the Wife of the IGP and POWA for the visit and said that the visit has lifted the spirits of over 600 members of the camp.
“We thank the state government and other well meaning individuals for their continued support,” she added.
Waziri also confirmed that members of the IDPs in Zungeru were living in peace with one another in the community.
“They have realised that it is a natural disaster that displaced them which they come to accept in good faith,” she concluded.
