The Nigeria Police Force has announced the suspension of the enforcement of the electronic central motor registry (e-CMR) initially scheduled to commence on July 29, 2024.
This decision is aimed at providing ample opportunity for mass enlightenment and education of citizens and residents on the benefits and effectiveness of the e-CMR in solving vehicle-related crimes and protecting individual and corporate vehicle ownership.
According to a press release signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the e-CMR is designed to ensure the safety and security of all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, by collating data and flagging reported stolen vehicles.
The initiative will provide a firsthand database for the Police to curb vehicular crimes, prevent multiple registrations, and serve as a database for biometric and other data of vehicle owners and individuals.
The Police clarified that the e-CMR is not a revenue-generating platform but an initiative to digitalize policing for effectiveness and general safety of lives and property.
Members of the public are urged to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online, and technical support is available for inquiries.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has charged all Police officers to desist from requesting e-CMR certificates from individuals, and those found extorting or exploiting members of the public will be sanctioned accordingly.
