Police detectives from the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested 24 years old Onyinye Mbadike of No 7 Trimnell Street, Aguda, Lagos State for assault and child abuse.
Onyinye was arrested following a viral video on the social media showing the suspect torturing a 10 years old boy identified as Chibike EziAmaka.
The video also showed the suspect locking the boy up in a dog’s kennel. The video was widely condemned by well meaning Nigerians.
National Wire gathered that the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Zubairu Muazu, after getting news of the viral video, ordered the Gender Unit of the Command to identify the Woman in the video, rescue the child and make the suspect face the full weight of the law. The Gender Unit immediately traced the suspect to Chumpe Liquor Store, Surulere and her residence at Aguda.
The Boy has since been rescued and taken to a secured shelter, while the suspect, now in police net admitted that she is the one on the viral video flogging the child with a belt but denied locking the boy in a cage with dogs.
According to her statement, she said only locked him in an empty dog kennel where bags are kept. She claimed to have locked up the boy for allegedly stealing and gulping alcoholic drink from the refrigerator and started misbehaving by smashing the side mirror of her Toyota Camry with stone which made her detain him in the dog kennel.
Investigation revealed that the boy, Chibike lost his parents and was brought to Lagos in 2012 from Anambra State by the Mother of the Suspect (who is Chibike’s aunt) along with his two siblings.
In view of the above incident, the Command has reiterated its commitment towards protecting the rights of children and other vulnerable members of the society from all forms of violence and abuses. .The suspect will be charged to Court as soon as investigation end
