Twelve notorious pirates have attacked and kidnapped some policemen and some Very Important Personality (VIP) they were escorting in Rivers State.
Nationalwire gathered from Police Situation reports that the incident took place between Degema and Bakana villages in the state.
The policemen were said to have been posted to Elevin Associates; an approved beat under the commandership of Superintendent John Aya were escorting some VIPs identified as Malvin Thompson and his Uncle Festus Atline.
It was further gathered that the officers involved were attacked about 0800 hours on the 24 May, 2020 while sailing on a speed boat.
The officers included Inspector Magaji Mathias; Inspector Tekon Ofot; Sergeant Uche Ene; Sergeant Nwokoro Kingsley; Sergeant Okpara.
The pirates who were operating on two gun boats mounted with one mechine gun and two AK 47 rifle opened fire on the police team immediately they ambushed them. However, it was gathered that the police officers swiftly responded with fierce fire against the pirates.
As a result of the fierce fire exchange, the driver of the police boat was said to have abandoned the boat and jumped into the river for safety leading to the boat losing control.
In order to forestall the boat from capsizing, it was learnt that Inspector Tekon Ofot with AK 47 rifle no: 52-2404262; SGT Nwokoro Kingsley with AK 47 rifle NO: 1999 AGC 0231; Sgt Okpara Obiuto with AK47 rifle NO: 52-2518603 jumped into the river for safety.
However, Sgt Uche Eneh with rifle NO: 1999 AGB 1245 was left in the boat due to his inability to swim. In the process, he was injured by the hoodlums after beating him to pump before threwing him into the river and made away with his service rifle.
Also kidnapped were the VIP and his Uncle by the pirates before they sped off on their boat.
However, Inspectors Ofot and two others who had jumped into the river for safety lost their rifles in the process.
It was further learnt that the police authorities had contacted the services of sea divers for the recovery of the lost arms.
The pirates who took the kidnapped victims to an unknown destination are yet to make contacts with both the police or members of the family.
However, a manhunt is said to be on with a view to rescuing the victims and arresting the criminals.
