The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector Command
on Wednesday arrested 110 Traffic offenders for Number plate violation, and other offences in private and commercial vehicles within the State.
FRSC began the special operation tagged “Operation Thunderstorm” to clamp down on motorists and Very Important Personalities (VIPs) who are in the habit of not fixing number plates and those who are fond of replacing their number plates with pet names.
The Lagos Sector Commander Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide said in a statement signed by Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi, FRSC Public Education Officer in Lagos that the enforcement was carried out after the Command noticed the recent flagrant disobedience to the National Road Traffic Regulations by motorists.
He explained that the operations is one of the Command’s intervention patrol aimed at reducing Road Traffic Crashes and also putting a stop to the impunity of not properly affixing number plates and other violations involving private cars, commercial buses and Articulated Trucks.
In addition, the FRSC boss stated that a total of 110 vehicles were issued tickets for various offences of 150 while 75 vehicles was impounded and 35 documents confiscated during the operation.
Ogungbemide used the opportunity to remind motorists that number plate has security features that should not be tampered with under any disguise.
“We have noticed a new trend of aberration and disregard to law and order. A situation where some Very Important Personalities (VIPs) and motorists change one of their Number Plates, which comes in pairs, with their pet names or their popular slogans can no longer be tolerated”.
Explaining further, he noted that private/commercial number plates comes in pairs meant for both front and rear of the vehicle except for Articulated vehicle number plates that comes in three.
In a similar vain, the Sector Commander charges Commanding Officers on improved Operations across the State in line with the Corps mandate of 15% Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) and 20% fatalities reduction in Lagos State.
He, therefore, advised VIPs, motorists to revert to using their original number plate which is not expected to be covered.
He further said that in case of any emergency motorists should call FRSC Toll free number 122 for prompt rescue.
