Agbura community, Yenagoa council area of Bayelsa state has alleged that weeks after an oil pipeline situated in parts of her community spilled,the company has continued paying leaps service upon clamours to containing the situation.
The paramount ruler of the community, HRH. E.N. Daufa made these revelations yesterday in an interview with Newsmen in Yenagoa.
He stated that save for an unscheduled,non-formal visit paid to the community just ones since the spill started by one the company’s Community liaison officer,CLO,(name withheld) no other attempt have been made by the operators to curbing the problem.
The royal father however commended the state government for timely intervention,asserting that save for the government’s benevolence which had brought them some socour,there has never been a day since the spill started weeks ago that the shell petroleum Development Company of Nigeria,SPDC provided them with one form relief materials to cushion the effect of the hardship occasioned by the disaster.
Daufa alleged that rather than get the clean up processes of the hazardous environment started,the multinational was instead black-mailing the community with unfounded rumours that they had earlier came to commence remediation work on the affected areas,but were antagonized and chased out of site by rampaging community members.
He averred that shell’s tactics was capable of causing even greater havoc on the leftover of the already damaged ecosystem.
“Shell was going about telling lies about our community. They said they came to start cleaning work, but that Agbura community chased then away,but it was a total falsehood”, he said.
” The general public should please disregard this trending rumours.It was ones one man who introduced himself as Shell’s PRO came to my palace, and since after that day,I’ve not set my eyes on him again”, he added.
“As we speak, the only source of water here,the Ekoli River is polluted.Go and see it for yourself,fishes and other aquatic lifes are dying.From here to the last community on this River and even other linking Rivers.Every where crude oil is floating”, he noted.
“It was the state government which had been trying to solve this problem as a mediator. The government has been calling us for meetings towards resolving this problem” , he said.
