The national union of road transport workers (NURTW), Bayelsa state chapter Thursday staged a walk-out protest at the venue of the Nigerian labour congress (NLC), Bayelsa state chapter election.
Leading the protest, NURTW state chairman, comrade ThankGod Eribo said the protest was a fall out of the NLC’s quest to prevent them from contesting for the election.
Eribo harped that while he travelled to the NLC and NURTW national offices at Abuja on several occasions prior to the election to formally intimate them of his interest to contest for the position of Ex-officio member in the NLC election, stressing that while both national offices of the NURTW and NLC accepted his form for the said position, on reaching Yenagoa, the state capital venue for the said Nigerian labour congress election ,himself and other NURTW delegates received the shocker of their lives as the deputy national president of the NLC and returning officer of the state election, comrade Asumini Amaechi bared him from contesting, saying the positon of the EX-officio is exclusively reserved just for women.
The transport union helmsman maintained that while reports reaching him from Abuja and other state branches of the NLC election has it that in such climes atleast no fewer than two executive positions were allotted to the NURTW it is surprising to note that in Bayelsa state something else has befallen their union.
The NURTW boss emphasized that his union is waiting for their national headquarter for further directives. Meanwhile comrade John Ndiomu, the Bayelsa state NLC chairman has won for a second tenure, polling 923 votes defeating Mrs. Koin Slelepre who got 75 votes, while Adama Pre-ebi polled 352 votes to emerge as vice chairman, Mr. Tompre Kalama scored 322 votes to clinch the position of Auditor, just as other positions were returned unopposed.
