The bankers committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said on Thursday October 4, 2018, that its will soon set up a mobile court to try those abusing the naira across the country.
Mrs Handa Ambah Managing Director of FSDH merchant bank explained to financial press at the post bankers committee briefing in Lagos that the intention is not to catch and punish anybody but rather to encourage attitudinal change among Nigerians.
She said the bankers committee are of the view that most of the people abusing the currency are doing it out of ignorance. Commenting on the naira abuse, director corporate affair of CBN Mr Isaac Okorafor said CBN act of 2007 prohibits abuse of the local currency. He said they are collaborating with the Nigerian Police and ministry of justice among others to put a stop in the abuse of naira.
On his part the director of banking supervision, Alhaji Ahmad Abdullahi noted that they discussed the economy, particularly the global challenge. Pointing out that there is still relative confidence in the economy, in view of the rise in the prices of crude oil and the level of external reserve. He urged that all hands must be on the desk in order to sustain the momentum.
