Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo Thursday December 12th 2025 was reported to have slumped while discharging his official duties in Government House, Yenagoa, the State capital.
To this end, The Tide later learnt the State’s number two man was later rushed down to the Federal Medical Centre(FMC) Yenagoa for emergency resuscitation where medical experts later pronounced him dead on arrival.
While the cause of the Deputy Governor’s death has not been made public as at press time, a Statement issued by the Bayelsa State Government on Friday confirming his death stated that the Government deeply regrets his sudden passing.
The statement read in parts: “The Bayelsa State Government announces with deep regret and profound shock the sudden passing of the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Ph.D on Thursday, 11th December 2025, at the age of 60.
“The Deputy Governor was active and carrying out official duties earlier in the day. He collapsed while proceeding to a scheduled meeting within his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead”.
The Statement added that the deputy governor’s demise was not just painful, it was a great loss to the Government, people of the State and the nation, noting that Senator Ewhrudjakpo was an accomplished public servant who served the State with distinction as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in the former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson’s administration.
National Wire also gathered that prior to his election in 2019 as Deputy Governor, the late Ewhrudjakpo was the Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District.
The Statement added: “Governor Douye Diri, on behalf of the Government and people of Bayelsa State, expresses heartfelt condolences to the wife of the late deputy governor, Her Excellency, Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, Ofoni Federated Community, His Excellency, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and all citizens of the State”.
Arising from the shock of the sudden demise of his deputy, the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, yesterday has declared a State Mourning period of three working days in his honour in his with all flags flying at half-mast, while also
praying for God’s comfort and strength for the family and the entire State.
In same vein, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), through its factional National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong has said the Party received with deep shock the news of the passing of the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, describing him as a trusted, faithful party man.
The Party Stalwart described his death as devastating, saying his demise has left the factional National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and indeed the entire membership the party, especially party faithful in Bayelsa State in profound grief.
The Party said: “While alive, Senator Ewhrudjakpo was an honest and consistent politician who believed in and practiced politics with principle.
‘He was a person of conviction, not convenience; a leader whose life was anchored on belief, integrity, and strength of character. He held firmly to these virtues until his final moments.
“We’re deeply saddened by the passing of this hero of political integrity, and we pray that God grants his soul eternal rest. We express our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State on this painful and irreparable loss”.
