A fake soldier identified as Yemi Ayeni, 32, has been arrested by the police for beating to stupor a female police Inspector in Lagos.
The Officer, Inspector Martina Onyeacho, was on duty controlling traffic at Shibiri bus stop, Ilemba Hausa when the incident took place.
The incident happened on the 9th August, 2020 about 1730 hours, which drew the attention of passersby who called in the police.
As a result, a patrol team was promptly deployed to the scene to rescue the officer but met that she has been sufficiently bruised and wounded.
A witness said that Ayeni the suspect had presented himself as a soldier in a passenger bus that obstructed traffic flow on the busy road, waiting for passengers.
He was said to have been angered by the order issued by the traffic Police woman to the driver to move his vehicle away from the main road to pave way for free flow of traffic.
He claimed that the police woman did not accord him the respect he deserves as a soldier seated in the front of the bus. Moreover, she was wrong to have challenged the driver while he was there.
Due to exchange of words, galvanised into a physical assault on her, beating her with sticks, punched and kicked her in the process.
On interrogation, it was found out that the suspect was dismissed from training after four months from the Depot, Nigerian Army,
Zaria in 2002 on mental health grounds.
Since his dismissal, he has been posing as a soldier, whereas he is fake.
He claimed to be married with a daughter who left him six months ago and staying with the mother.
A military source said it was wrong and out of place for the police to label such person as a dismissed soldier. “Ordinarily, you cannot classify such a person as a dismissed soldier.
“You can only call someone a dismissed soldier after he has been issued a regimental number. In this case, according to the suspect, he was sent out from selection point when he was found to be mentally unstable. So, such a person has no record with the army and cannot be classified as dismissed,” he reiterated.
The Lagos State Police Spokesperson, SP Elkana Bala, disclosed that the Police woman has been taken to the Hospital for treatment as she sustained various degree of injuries from the punches and beating she received from the suspect.
Investigation is ongoing and the suspect would be changed to Court.
