Lagos CP Orders Investigation into Allegations Against DPO Elemoro Following Vanguard Report

The Lagos State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into serious allegations leveled against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Elemoro Division, following a report published by Vanguard newspaper titled “Power in Wrong Hands: How a Lagos DPO Tried to Jail 2 Innocent Mechanics” by Esther Onyegbula.

In an official statement released 5th May, 2025, and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, announced the constitution of a five-man committee to investigate the matter. The committee is headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and includes the Officer-in-Charge of the Legal Unit.

To ensure transparency and impartiality, the DPO and other officers mentioned in the publication have been redeployed from the Elemoro Division to allow for an unhindered investigation. The committee has been mandated to submit its findings within a week.

The Commissioner of Police has also extended an invitation to the lawyer representing the two mechanics involved in the case for a meeting with the investigative committee at a time of the lawyer’s convenience.

Emphasizing the command’s stance against inhuman treatment and injustice, CP Jimoh assured the public that any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.

“The Lagos State Police Command does not support any form of inhuman treatment or miscarriage of justice. If the officers involved are found wanting, appropriate disciplinary measures will be applied to serve as an effective deterrent,” the statement read.

The Commissioner urged the public to maintain trust in the police, reaffirming that any proven wrongdoing by officers will be redressed accordingly.
