While the devastating flood that paralysed many communities in Bayelsa State recedes, the state based female football team, Bayelsa Queens have once again put the state on the map by clinching a ‘golden’ bronze Saturday night at the third-place match of the CAF Women’s Champions League in faraway Morocco.
The team defeated Simba Queens of Tanzania to win the historic medal, making the team the first Nigerian club to win a CAF Interclub medal in the female category.
The Nigerian Champions, Bayelsa Queens, following a 1-0 win over Tanzanian side Saturday night were earlier denied a chance in this year’s final by ASFAR Club of Morocco two days earlier in their semi-final fixture but respite came on Saturday when the Nigerians won a debut campaign in a CAF interclub competition.
With a goalless first half despite multiple attempts by both sides to break the deadlock, the only goal of the tension-soaked match came on the 70th minute when Juliet Sunday scored to secure a bronze medal win for the Nigerians.
Ten minutes earlier, a goal from the boot of Nigerian striker, Itimi was disallowed before Juliet Sunday found the back of the net.
The Nigerians would have increased the tally with a goal from Igboamalu who had a one-on-one with the Tanzanian goalkeeper but missed the chance.
The team has now made history by becoming the first Nigerian club to win a medal in a CAF Interclub competition.
The final of the 2022 CAF Champions League comes up on Sunday at the Prince Heritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium featuring defending Champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and ASFAR Club in an encounter that promises to be a cracker.
