Government at all levels have been charged to take the education of the girl child a prority and discourage early marriage of female children.

This is against the backdrop of the International Day for Women, which was celebrated on Wednesday.

Speaking in her office on Thursday, the Director General, Office of the Quality Assurance, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, said while Lagos and other southern States could be commended for promoting girl child education, their northern counterparts still had much to do to encourage education among the female folks.

She noted that the state government and the Federal Ministry of Education have championed advocacy for the support of the girl child education and women literacy.

“In the education sector, there have been a lot of advocacy policies to support women causes like we have the girl child education programme, how we have been encouraging  a lot of our girls to go to school; campaign against early marriage, how schools across the country should monitor girls welfare in schools and how to encourage more of this.

“Like the office of Quality Education Assurance in Abuja, there is a newly developed policy that talks more on provision of quality programmes for the girl child to encourage them like how they can be promoted in school, how they should be encouraged to come to school, to address some of their needs in school and discourage early marriage,” she said.

Soyombo maintained that with proper education of women, nation building could be guaranteed as women are the major stakeholders in raising and nurturing future leaders.

According to her, with the education of women, their performance in leadership roles toward nation building as support to their male counterparts would be exceptional and commendable.

While urging women to take part in politics for the progress of the country, she maintained that every woman must be determined, must have a clear goal and prioritise their time, especially in proper management of their homes, career and other things. All these, she said, must be well balanced.
