Niger state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has blamed the problem of inadequate portable water supply in Minna, the state capital and other major towns in the state on the inability of the ministry of water resources to identify competent firms to fix all the broken down Bi-Water treatment plants in parts of the state.
This is as a result of scarcity of portable water supply in Minna and its neighbouring communities, thereby fueling fears of a possible outbreak of epidemic diseases among the residents, particularly if an urgent solution is not proffered to the problem by the government as residents now rely mostly on water vendors for their domestic and commercial need as public water taps have run dried in recent times.
Governor Abubakar Sanni Bello who expressed concern about the problem of water scarcity everywhere in the state, lamented the poor situation, highlighting that the type of untreated water being consumed in most of the communities in the state on the occasion of his ongoing mid-term tour of the 25 local governments of the state, saying that the situation called for urgent attention.
He stated further that most of the the water being drank and used for domestic purposes was not even good for animals consumption and announced the release of N30 million for the fixing of broken down boreholes in Lapai and its environs and another N2 million for the provision of treated water at all the worshiping centres across the local government.
The governor also directed that the local government authorities and all the stakeholders to ensure that water is provided in all the centres with immediate effect as an interim measure.
Responding to the barrages of requests put forward by the Lapai local government area as presented by their spokesperson, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa who is also the state commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Governor Bello approved a 15KVE Transformer for the council which was estimated at about N75 million.
He however noted that the Lapai – Paiko road was not completely deplorable, but needs maintenance, while assuring that the road would be taken care by the state
