Former Presidential Spokesperson Doyin Okupe Dies at 71
Dr. Doyin Okupe, former presidential spokesperson and political strategist, has passed away at the age of 71.
Family sources confirmed that he died in the early hours of Friday, March 7, 2025, the Nation newspaper reported.
Okupe was a senior adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan and later served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign. However, he stepped down from the campaign in December 2022 following a money laundering conviction and subsequently resigned from the Labour Party after the 2023 general elections.
Born Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe 22 March, 1952, he was a trained physician and politician. He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre and served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC). During General Sani Abacha’s regime, he was detained and later disqualified from participating in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries. He also made an unsuccessful bid for the Ogun State governorship under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
