Director of the International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos, Mr. Lanre Arogundade has enjoined the Nigerian media to give more voice to the women folks.
Arogundade made this call yesterday in commemoration of the International Women’s Day celebration which celebrates the achievements of women in all spheres of life.
The Director of IPC is of the opinion that with adequate media support, the women folks could be bolder in contributing to national development.
“On this day, we at IPC are calling on the Nigeria media to address the imbalance in the coverage of women so that their true voices could be heard in politics, elections, governance and development,” he said, adding that “by rendering their support, the Nigerian media would contribute to the processes that will lead to the realisation of this year’s theme: “Women in the changing world of work: Planet 50-50 by 2030.”
In a statement made available to National Wire by IPC’s Safety Alert Desk Officer, Melody Akinjiyan, Arogundade, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos Chapter, also called on the media to exercise professional and ethical discretion in reporting issues of violence against women, particularly the girl child, in order to prevent stigmatisation and other negative social consequences.
Also to commemorate the anniversary, scores of women from various civil society organisations participated in a road walk in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital with placards bearing different messages in support of Nigerian women.
