Bayelsa State Commissioner for Ijaw national affairs, Elder Patrick Ucheowaji Erasmus has lauded the state governor Senator Douye Diri on the way and manner he has been handling the issues concerning the ravaging floods in the state.
Erasmus gave the commendations while speaking with Newsmen shortly after inspecting some relief materials brought by donors alongside other members of the state executive council who are members of the state flood mitigation committee at the central internally displaced persons(IDPs) camp at oxbow lake Yenagoa, the state capital.
He described Governor Diri’s concern and assessment tours to flood impacted Communities across the state and his undeterred efforts at providing the impacted areas with succour in their most trying times as having again demonstrated the governor’d true leadership qualities.
The Commissioner commended the Governor for setting up of the flood mitigation committee, saying that by virtue of his pronouncement and inauguration of the committee, all members of the state executive council were automatic members, hence, hands of all serving Commissioners were on deck as a working team.
He also hinted that as expected of the committee members, they have left no stone unturned in discharging their onerous task, describing Governor Diri as a sympathetic leader who have shouldered not only the responsibilities of state’s Governor, but that of the Governor for all Ijaws affected by the floods and other concerns.
He said: “My boss, the governor of the state, his excellency, Senator Douye Diri following his proactive ways of handling things as it were inaugurated the flood mitigation committee headed by the Hon. Commissioner for Environment, Gbaranbiri Iselema.
“But by the Governor’s pronouncement all Exco members are automatic members of the committee and so you see us(Commissioners) here early morning everyday till evening, working in various capacities to ensure the delivery of our mandate as a committee”.
“As you know the state is the worst hit by the menace of flooding and so here in this IDPs camp, Oxbow lake which is the central camp, you see all Commissioners working to make sure that our people affected by the floods get the best the state government could afford within the available limited resources.
“The Governor has over and over again demonstrated his love for the people of the state through his assessment tours and visits to impacted Communities across the state and in most cases providing them with succour. He is indeed an empathizing and true leader, knowing that Bayelsa is the Jerusalem of the Ijaw nation”.
