Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has vehemently denied allegations of terrorism financing, describing the claims as “reckless, false, and malicious.”
The allegations were made in a publication by SaharaReporters, which listed Emefiele among alleged financiers of terrorism in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Saturday, Emefiele categorically denied any involvement in terrorism or terrorist financing, stating that the allegations were entirely fabricated and baseless. He expressed concern that the publication was aimed at maligning his name and misleading the public.
“The fight against terrorism is too important to be trivialised by irresponsible reporting, and Nigerians deserve better than such reckless misinformation,” Emefiele said. “Throughout my service to the nation or even in my private life, at no time have I been involved in any activity remotely connected to terrorism, terrorist financing, or any action that threatens the peace and security of our nation.”
Emefiele urged the public to disregard the publication in its entirety and called on the press to refrain from publishing falsehoods and sensational claims without evidence or due diligence. He insisted that there was no scintilla of truth in the allegation and demanded that the publishers be held accountable for their actions.
The former CBN governor’s denial comes amid heightened scrutiny of public officials and their associations. Emefiele’s statement emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability, and he reiterated his dedication to the security and well-being of Nigeria.
